A Comparison of Motivations Behind Tourism Trips to Italy – Travellers of the Grand Tour Era vs. Modern Tourists

Agnieszka Niezgoda

Abstract

The aim of the article is to compare the tourist motivation to travel to Italy occurring over the course of history, in particular the times of the Grand Tour, and contemporary tourists. Based on literature review the Author can find, that in the times of the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Grand Tour the journey to Italy served educa-tional, learning, improvement and cognitive purposes. To know the motivations of modern tourists, the focus group interview method was applied. For modern tourists, education is also an important motive by visiting well known places because of their historical and artistic values. However, for current tourists, the motives related to "escaping to everyday life", as well as learning about culture, including cuisine, new people, and the desire to rest and recreation are more important. An important motive (referring to the Romantic era) is the desire to show off the journey made on social media.
