The assessment of knowledge and awareness of gluten and related topics among elderly

Abstract

Growing evidence indicates a marked increase in implementation of gluten-free diets. On the one hand, it concerns people suffering from gluten-related disorders such as: celiac disease, wheat allergy and non-celiac gluten sensitivity for which the only treatment is a gluten-free diet. On the other hand, many people follow a „free from” food trend. Recently, it has been suggested that a gluten-free diet is an effective method for weight loss and can improve overall well-being. Many older people decide to start gluten-free diet which is mainly connected with health problems but also media encourage them to follow this fad. The key element to appropriately fulfil the requirements of gluten-free diet is the proper knowledge about gluten free products. The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge and awareness of elder people concerning gluten, its intolerance forms and gluten-free diet. A survey of 54 people over the age of 60 was conducted. The method of direct interview was used. The results showed that only 31% of interviewees knew that gluten was a protein. Only 11% of seniors were able to differentiate the celiac disease from gluten sensitivity, while 17% knew that celiac disease requires a lifelong gluten-free diet. Although more than half of interviewees claimed they have eaten gluten-free products, only 17% were able to list what products they used in their diet. In conclusion, the survey found that people over the age of 60 had low level of awareness about gluten and gluten-related diseases, which may result from low interest and no health implications to apply gluten-free diet.
