Patent valuation: motives and approaches

Proper understanding and evaluation of their intellectual property has become a crucial undertaking for innovation-oriented companies and institutions. The aim of this theoretical article is to evaluate which are the main patent valuation approaches and what are their methods, as well to assess the main reasons for patent valuation, based on the literature review. According to the literature analysis one the main reasons for patent valuation is to identify the inventions with a high growth potential. Furthermore, the main approaches of patent valuation are: quantitative, qualitative and econometric, patent-based indicator approach and they include numerous methods of assessing patent’s value, presented in the article.
