Aneta Kaczyńska , Michał Jankowski
AbstractEvaluation of banks efficiency is a frequent subject of many studies, especially due to the financial crisis. This article aims at estimating technical efficiency of the biggest commercial banks in the Polish banking sector in 2009–2013. The study is based on a nonparametric method of calculating relative efficiency called Data Envelopment Analysis. The results were obtained assuming that banks operate as a financial intermediaries. The findings of this research indicate the lowest technical efficiency in 2009 (42%) and 2010 (48%), which could be associated with the financial crisis. In subsequent years, there was an improvement in banks performance which was reflected by the highest technical efficiency in 2011. Then it stabilized at an average level of 57% in 2013.
